Hyperbole and a Half for the holidays

Just in time for the holidays, the hilarious blog Hyperbole and a Half presents a new entry, "The Year Kenny Loggins Ruined Christmas." Blogger/cartoonist Allie Brosh regularly strikes comedic gold when she flashes back to her childhood as a strikingly willful little girl, and her latest reminiscence depicts her failed efforts to recreate the Nativity Story: "I was going to rewrite the birth of Jesus Christ and I was going to make it POP."

Consider the Source: 'Gulliver's Travels'

Jack Blacks new Gullivers Travels movie seems to confirm that the misconception that Jonathan Swift published nothing more than a classic children's book in 1726. The trailers suggest a special-effects driven comedy along the lines of Night at the Museum, with contemporary renderings of some of Swift's fantastical imagery, such as normal-sized Lemuel Gulliver pinned to the ground by scores of ropes from the tiny Lilliputians.

City of Ink makes a bid for the small screen

African-Americans make up less than one percent of all tattoo artists artist, tattooist and City of Ink co-owner Miya Bailey relays as much in a new shop video. The video's actually an unsolicited bid from the Castleberry Hill shop for a reality TV show in the vein of TLC's now defunct "Miami Ink" and its milquetoast follow-up "L.A. Ink."

Theatrical Outfit programs new musical, bumps 'Caroline'

Given Caroline, or Change, Theatrical Outfit has apparently chosen "Change" by postponing its planned Spring production of the Tony Kushner Civil Rights-era musical to the 2011-2012 season. Instead, artistic director Tom Key explains that the company will debut a new world premiere musical this spring:
We have an extraordinary opportunity to present a ground-breaking World Premiere Musical from the dynamic local talent of Patdro Harris (Blues In The Night, Black Nativity) and S. Renee Clark (Big River, Mahalia).

Cirque Dreams: like The Nutcracker on acid

Cirque Dreams combines the theatrics of circus acts like Cirque du Soleil and adapts them to a Broadway stage setting for Holidaze, opening Tues., Nov. 30 at the Cobb Energy Centre.
The show's oversize holiday decorations, toy soldiers, snowmen and other wintry wonders might have you thinking that Holidaze is just another overblown Christmas production.

It's just been announced that Atlanta-based artist Gyun Hur has been awarded the Hudgens Prize and the distinguished honor of being $50,000 richer. The French Connection: France-Atlanta Project provides a link to French culture

France and the US have been buds since the days of Ben Franklin, but it's a friendship that has a history of becoming strained from time to time. In our opinion, it all stems from a bit of sibling rivalry as to whose revolution was better.

Wizard World Atlanta Comic-Con takes Cobb Galleria

How to achieve awesome success with Tim and Eric

When Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim of Cartoon Network's "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!" started a website in 2002 to make friends laugh with their comedy sketches and video Christmas presents, grandiose plans were not in place. ATL Comic Profile: Matt O'Meara

Though he wouldn't want you to know it, comedian Matt O'Meara isn't an asshole. Sure, sometimes his jokes can be racist, sexist and/or politically uncomfortable, but its O'Meara's ability on stage to make people laugh at jokes they feel bad laughing at - not his bright and polite off-stage demeanor - that has made him stand out in many of Atlanta's comedy rooms.

Rocio Rodriguez shows Drawings and Paintings

Rocio Rodriguez's new exhibition at Barbara Archer Gallery opens this Friday under the name (or lack thereof) Drawings and Paintings. This is typical for Rodriguez, who has titled most of her solo exhibitions for the past thirty years as Paintings, Paintings and Drawings, and other variations on that theme, but the Cuban-born Georgia resident shouldn't be confused for an artist disinterested in the themes or subjects of her work.

Selling Souls for Cambodia

Screaming Souls
Terry Checks Screaming Souls head to New York
Terry Check, a local photographer, was selected to exhibit his work, Screaming Souls at the 14th Annual Friends of Friends Photography Auction in New York City on December 7th from 6-8:30pm. In addition, work of international photographers such as Elliott Erwitt, Andre Kertesz and Hiroshi Sugimoto will be auctioned to benefit the Angkor Hospital for Children in Cambodia. From the Urban Living series, Screaming Souls, exhibited at the Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany, depicts the extermination of six million European Jews during World War II.
Urban Living, a segmented journey through Europe, documents people as themselves without their facades. Look once, you see a picture €¦ look twice, you see the essence of others, and maybe yourself. Terry said €œI love people €¦. the diversity, interaction and emotions of people. Love, suffering, fear, laughter, anger, despair and complacency are powerful, without color or language€.
Wherever people gather or their memoirs linger behind, Terry strives to capture the moment transcending time and place. His work explores the meaning of life on earth and thereafter. Noticing what others don€™t €¦ reaching without consequences to expand his photography.
